But in 1954, the farm adjacent to his father's farm came up for sale and he jumped at the chance to buy it and within a few weeks he arranged to buy his father's old farm as well and he was back on the homestead where he spent the rest of his life. After their wedding, he worked briefly for another dairy farmer, dipped his toe into the business of trading cattle and bought his first farm in the town of Manheim. In October 1949, Edward married Anita Jiampietro, a union of 61 years that would last until her death in 2010. Legal issues relating to a young father dying without a will prompted the sale of the farm after several years, but the die had been cast: Edward would be a dairy farmer and someday he would get his family's farm back. His high school yearbook picture was captioned, "A farm is the thing for Eddie!" How right they were.īut Edward's father died young, pitching hay on the homestead of his father, James, in 1944 and at the age of sixteen, Eddie, his mother, Doris and his brothers and sisters were left to try and hang on to the family's farm. Growing up, Edward's education began at a schoolhouse at Irish Settlement, Schuyler, then at Bullard Schoolhouse, Newport and ultimately, he entered the West Canada Valley Central System, Newport and graduated from the high school in Middleville.
Maxwell and Dennis continued the Maxwell farming tradition, working on farms in Newport after his marriage to Doris Morey that culminated in their purchase of a farm just over the Newport town line in the town of Schuyler in 1935. His large family included Edward's father, Dennis R. Edward's grandfather James, a son of Dennis, also became a farmer in Newport. Dennis established a homestead just outside the village of Newport that remained in the Maxwell family into the late 1980's. Edward's Irish ancestors, including his sixteen-year-old great-grandfather, Dennis Maxwell, came to the United States in 1853. He was a leap year baby, born on February 29, 1928, in the town of Newport, to Dennis and Doris Morey Maxwell.
